It All Started with a Birthday Cake

“I was very disappointed and returned home empty-handed. I kept thinking that surely the world of confectionery could not offer only such terrible cakes as the ones I had just seen. I sat down at my computer and started browsing the internet. What I discovered was an absolute dream. Beautiful and colourful children’s cakes on all kinds of themes, decorated with countless fairy-tale figures and animals. I contacted the confectioner whose cakes appealed to me the most. Unfortunately, I had no idea that a cake needed to be ordered well in advance. She replied that she would be happy to make the cake, but sadly it was not possible at such short notice.”

And so Monika and her sister decided to bake the cake themselves at home, with love. The cake was a huge success and opened Monika’s path into the world of confectionery, which she had just begun to discover. Cake decorating simply enchanted her.

She soon found out that many amateur bakers were baking for their families, friends and acquaintances, and decided to give it a try as well. She knew she needed fondant icing. At that time, however, there were not many fondant products available on our market, and those that were available were very expensive. When Monika calculated all the costs of ingredients and her work, she began to wonder whether making cakes was worthwhile at all.

The Discovery of Formix Fondant

One day, she discovered a fondant icing made in Hungary. “I was thrilled, because I am Hungarian myself. So I focused on Hungarian manufacturers of fondant icing, because it was clear to me that their products would be significantly more affordable,” says Monika.

After a long search, she found a manufacturer who sold their products only in Hungary. Nevertheless, they decided to respond to this unusual request from abroad and sent the first 2 kg of Formix fondant icing to the Czech Republic.

“When the package arrived, I was unsure what to do next. How should I proceed? What should I compare the fondant with? What should it taste and smell like, and what properties should it actually have? I had a great idea and contacted the operator of a large confectionery forum, who had extensive experience with cake decorating, to try and test the fondant.”

And so the two kilograms of Formix were shared piece by piece among nearby cake shops, where confectioners tested it. By coincidence, a piece also made its way to a meeting of amateur cake decorators. Thanks to this, Monika discovered that the fondant icing was very tasty and coloured beautifully, even though it contained no artificial additives or colourings.

From the First Orders to Her Own E-shop

Full of enthusiasm, Monika contacted everyone who owned a cake shop or sold confectionery tools with an offer of cooperation, and ordered the first 60 kg of Formix.

She spent every free moment, with her child in her arms, packing orders, and handled business correspondence at night. Thanks to her own experience of searching for ingredients for her daughter’s cake, she decided that she would supply her customers every day.

She set herself the goal of sending every parcel ordered by 12 o’clock on the very same day. Dortisimo.cz still follows this rule today, but now accepts same-day dispatch orders until 1 p.m.

“At that time, my daughter was still very small and I went to the post office every day with the pram to send parcels. There were so many of them that sometimes my daughter had to walk by herself, because there was no room left for her in the pram among all the parcels. Several times, due to the enormous interest in Formix, we almost blocked the post office. When opening hours were not enough, my husband helped me after work by taking the parcels to the main post office in Prague, which was open until midnight, so that I could keep my promise to customers.”

Smartflex Velvet and Cooperation with Confectioners

Thanks to the growing market and cooperation with confectioners, Dortisimo.cz was involved in the development of the new modelling paste Smartflex Velvet. Those who had supported it from the beginning voted on the most desired flavour and the best product size.

Based on the results, the five most preferred flavours were produced — almond, chocolate, vanilla, orange and cherry. After some time, two more were added: lemon and strawberry.

Thanks to perseverance and enthusiasm, as well as listening to the needs and wishes of future customers, Monika gained a wide customer base, and Dortisimo.cz maintains this high standard of service to this day.

Today, Dortisimo.cz is a reliable partner for home bakers, professional confectioners, bakers and everyone who wants to create beautiful, high-quality sweet products. From the original idea of helping talented cake decorators and confectioners, an e-shop has grown with a wide range of ingredients, tools, moulds, decorations and other products for modern confectionery.

We are the exclusive importers of several world-renowned confectionery brands, such as Smartflex, Food Colours, Fractal Colors and others, to the Czech Republic. We carefully select products that make sense for both professionals and home enthusiasts. We constantly follow new trends, search for quality manufacturers from both domestic and international production, and expand our range so that customers can find everything they need in one place.

Cooperation with Czech confectionery talents and personalities, such as Besky ♥, is also important to us. We support confectionery competitions, vocational schools and new talents, because we believe that it is the community of confectioners and bakers that moves the entire field forward.
